Eighteen months after the events of Season 4, Jack Bauer is forced to L.A. after the only four people who knows he's alive are all assassination targets. Coinciding with the killings, an anti-terrorism treaty is being signed by Russia and the U.S., leading Bauer to suspect a link with the assassinations, the treaty, and a group of Russian terrorists. As the day unfold, it's apparent that the day's horrific events were set in motion by an individual in the U.S. administration - someone with the power and resources to thwart Bauer's every move.

The LA counter terrorist unit (CTU) are informed of the threat and are told to be on high alert. Department Head, George Mason finds himself reluctantly having to call upon the services of retired Special Agent Jack Bauer. CTU have been tipped off that a nuclear bomb is set to detonate somewhere in Los Angeles within the next 24 hours. The clock is ticking...

It's been 3 years since CTU Agent Jack Bauer thwarted a terrorist attempt to plunge the United States into war. Now he's back in LA, after working undercover for six months bringing down drug lord, Ramon Salazar. But then the FBI receives a phone call threatening the release of a deadly virus if Salazar isn't released from prison within 6 hours. As CTU races to locate the virus, Jack realises that the only way to prevent additional terrorist demands is to find the source of the virus by breaking Salazar out of prison himself. The clock is ticking...

But it's soon evident that the kidnapping is part of a much larger plan, for every time Jack thinks he's averted disaster a new and more ominous plot is uncovered. As CTU races to figure out what the terrorists' true objective it becomes clear that the events of this day have been years in the making and only a miracle will disrupt the scheduled attacks that the terrorists hope will bring the country to it's knees.

The assassinations coincide the the signing of an anti-terrorism treaty between Russia and the U.S., leading Jack to suspect a link between the assassinations, the treaty, and a group of Russian terrorists holding hostages at the Ontario Airport. But a shocking and deadly discovery at the airport reveals just how far the terrorists are willing to go and how thoroughly tested the newly signed treaty will be before the day is over.
